Bukit Saga

Seven set out on a journey into the unknown when day broke. None of us knew the way. None of us knew the trail but we still went anyway. With only the GPS app Waze to guide us there, we were dependent on it to lead us the way. It took countless U-turns and an hour of a 20 minute journey for us to reach the foot of Bukit Saga by car.

The misty tops of the hill could not have been anymore enticing to hike. The goal of our hike was to reach a waterfall which required 40 minutes of trekking. Thinking that it was easy, excitedly, the seven prepped up with mosquito repellents, snapped some photos and began our journey unknowing of the long hike that awaited.

We followed markers on the trail; "Waterfall *arrow*" and red ribbons marked on trees. It took an hour and a half of rocky, muddy, slopey trails for us to reach the waterfall. When we reached, we were pretty disappointed. It was basically water falling off an 8 meter high wall of stone with people standing under it, bathing. Yep. We weren't impressed. We asked a lady to take a shot of us at the waterfall and we were on our way.

Tired, cranky and hungry, we started our way back home. Guess what though? We got lost. Lucky for us there were good Samaritans around who helped guide us the way. Surprisingly there were checkpoints along the routes where small wooden huts were built for hikers. There was a water dispenser available for parched hikers - and boy, did I utilise that facility. Energised and our water bottles refilled, we continued on.

We kept our fingers crossed at every bend of the trail that we encountered, hoping that it would be the exit of the hill. One bend after another, one clearing after another, we were greeted time and time again by endless greens and trails. We thought we would never get out. We even thought that the hill was 'trolling' us not wanting to let us go of is clutches.

Nay! We refused to let our morale sink down so we started singing songs, told jokes and told stories. The seven bonded like never before. We greeted all that went past us, trying to keep our hopes up. Lo and behold, we finally reached the first checkpoint that we went past by on our way up. HUZZAH!

It was another 20 minutes to trek down from there so I shan't bore you with the details.

In short, Saga was a tiring, frustrating, fun, spur-of-the-moment 3 and a half hour hike that none of us will ever forget. Will we come back? Most probably yes but I think after Saga, we'll first take a break from hiking for a little while.
