Taylor's University Sky Adventure Club members went for White Water Rafting on the 21st of May 2011. 13 members participated in the event. If was a beautiful Saturday morning when we departed from Taylor's Lakeside Campus. Then, we met up with the instructor at Tanjung Malim Exit toll at 9.00am before heading to our destination - Slim River, Ulu Slim, Perak.
History of Slim River:
The name of the town was given by the river beside the town which call Sungai Slim. Slim River was a military strategic mid-point from North to South of Malaya during World War II. It was the site of a major battle during World War II between the Japanese and British forces which consisted of troops from India, Australia and Great Britain. The British lost the Battle of Slim River to the Japanese forces, who were equipped with tanks. The Japanese also had total air superiority. In their defeat at Slim River, the British suffered heavy casualties and many units were cut off from their line of retreat. The battle effectively ended British hopes of defending Malaya.
We took the truck and head to the inner part. It was a great short journey as all the members enjoyed the wind and bumpiness of the road while travelling on the truck. There, we were briefed by the instructor before heading to the spot for rafting. Members were separated into 3 groups - 4/5 people a boat with 2 guides. We were taught how to pump the rafting boat and not to forget the rules and instructions during rafting.
The river grading is level 2-3 and it was extremely fun with the strong current.
We endured obstacles like hitting the big rock, which is one of the most awesome fall which all members enjoyed the most throughout the rafting period.
There were a few stops during the rafting period, and there is a time where all of us stopped to replenish ourselves with light snacks and water. The guides arranged a simple game to keep us entertained.
The game goes by getting everyone to form a circle holding their own paddle. The guide will give the instruction of 'left or right'..when the direction is given, players are supposed to release their paddle and grab the paddle according to the direction given. Player will be out of the game when failed to catch the paddle. The Rock wins the game!
After rafting, everyone get themselves cleaned up and ate lunch. Not long after that, its the end of the awesome day and head back to Taylor's University.
Nevertheless, it was an excellent experience for all of us that went for the event and also to believe that this event has brought the members one step closer to one another.
Next event will be coming up in 4 more days... SATN 2011!!!!
